Project 3 is now (mostly) complete!

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed - it was a vast data collection effort. Findings are under the Project 3 page along with a full list of contributors.

Thames Valley Sustainable Operating Pathway (TVSOP)

Started in July 2021 with our launch event (see the talks here) TVSOP is a multidisciplinary network across the Thames Valley Deanery, aiming to examine and reduce where possible the environmental impact of our surgical and anaesthetic care from diagnosis through to recovery. We do this through education, engagement, and projects employing the SusQI framework

 Specifically we:

Since spring 2022, OxDAT has a Green Representative, who will lead on the annual or twice-annual OxDAT / TVSOP teaching day and the region-wide projects.

Autumn 2023 - TVSOP Project 3: HVAC Switch-Off

This project was voted for at the July 2023 Green Day.

Local teams gathered HVAC usage data over a normal week in theatres,  and compared it tto actual theatre usage in order to establish each site's number of wasted hours of active HVAC in terms of financial cost and environmental burden.

The findings will be used to enact change locally and were presented at the Macintosh Day in January 2024.

Autumn 2022 - TVSOP Project 2: Nitrous Oxide Mitigation

This project was voted for at the 2022 Green Day.

Local teams gathered nitrous oxide usage data over a normal week in theatres, aswell as procurement data for nitrous oxide supply in order to establish the region's nitorus oxide usage and waste.

The findings will be used to enact change locally and were presented at the Macintosh Day in January 2023.

Autumn 2021 - TVSOP Project 1: Environmental Impact of Anaesthetic Agents

This project received the most votes at the July 2021 launch.

Focussing on 2019 and 2020 we gathered procurement and theatre activity data, to explore the carbon footprint of the anaesthetic vapours and propofol.

All hospitals across the region had trainee and consultant leads involved with the project.

The findings, besides being used locally at each trust to identify means to change practice, were presented at the Macintosh Day January 2022, a regional teaching day hosted by OxDAT and Oxford CPD.
